Cara Shanks has been dancing since the age of four. She studied ballet for five years at Houston Ballet's Ben Stevenson Academy. Cara attended the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts as a dance major under LuAnne Carter and Janie Carothers and graduated in the year 2008. It was not until she became a part of the RAFA family directed by Lynette Mason Gregg under Luis Fuente where she found her true dancing home. Cara has worked with ballet instructors such as Luis Fuente, Misha Bart, Milena Leben, Cheryne Busch, Priscilla Nathan-Murphy, Lisa Ballo, Claudio Muñoz, and Jeanne Doornbos. Cara recieved her contemporary training from Peter Chu, Janie Carothers, LuAnne Carter, JoDee Engle, Noel Silva, Lauren Garson, and Amber Thorton. Cara has performed in many of BAHBT’s productions such as The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Alice and Wonderland, Swan Lake, Firebird, Carmen, Edward Scissor Hands, Cinderella, as well as many contemporary productions through the company. Cara received the Monticello Emerging Choreographer Award in 2009 at the RDA-SW Festival for her piece Intentions Within, where she was able to attend the Craft of Choreography Summer Workshop in Seattle, Washington. Cara is currently performing with the Houston Rockets 2010-2011 Power Dance Team. She is excited to make this her third year teaching with RAFA!
